Learn at GPY

We offer small group classes, evening knitting groups and other special events. Classes are for all skill levels: novices; beginner; intrepid beginner, intermediate and advanced. See our current class schedule below.

We also offer Knit-A-Longs (KALs) and Crochet-A-Longs (CALs), which are led by GPY staffers and feature current, contemporary, and fun projects. Participants join in to work on the featured projects together which offers great opportunities to learn from each other and exchange ideas, plus interesting conversation. KAL and CAL series usually have a featured yarn, that is available for purchase at GPY. We recommend that participants have advanced beginner skills to join KALs and CALs.

Check the Calendar page for a complete schedule of events, classes, and workshops.

Indigo Frost Poncho KAL
- Jan 03, 2019 04:30 pm

Indigo Frost is a great little capelet/poncho worked seamlessly from the top down, with a loose turtle neck and an easy 4 Color-Slip-Stitch pattern band on the yoke. Eyelets on the body, the cute, deep 2x1 ribbings for the neck and the bottom edge, and its shorter length make this capelet a modern take on a classic transitional fashion piece. More details to follow for re-scheduled dates.

This workshop is fashioned after the sold-out ?Weaving for Knitters Island Retreats? Cat holds in Friday Harbor, Washington. Cat delights in teaching curious individuals to weave and to use their knitting skills to turn woven cloth into garments, bags, even Moebius cowls. Her kind, clear, and individualized teaching methods will guide you happily into this new rabbit hole, all on a friendly 16-inch rigid heddle loom which Green Planet Yarn will loan you for the duration of the class. If you decide you want to keep it, you will be able to purchase it at the end. As days go by Cat will share a treasure chest of simple manipulations that produce intricate variations, as well as ways to merge woven and knitted fabric. When she demonstrates how to knit from any edge or surface of handwoven cloth, knitters gasp with disbelief that it can be that easy. The skills and common sense Cat transmits are playful and easy. You?ll start out with a short warp in a worsted weight cotton yarn (provided), the equivalent of a beginning knitter?s first garter stitch scarf, so you can learn the basics (and experiment with some things beyond the basics) without anxiety. After that you will warp a second time with the yarn of your choice and begin to explore the possibilities in the fibers and techniques that draw you.

Cost: $ 550.00
Knitters cherish the sense of peace that washes over us when we sit down with a simple project and luxurious yarn. Imagine a project that flowed as naturally and beautifully as a river, with leaps, ripples, and glides, and that project required no directions, no charts...yet it continually moved forward like a river. And imagine that this project was so beautiful that strangers stopped to ask how you could manage to create something so intricate, so compelling. And imagine that you really had no answer, for the truth is that the project simply taught you it was safe to combine the innocence of a child with the wisdom of your hands. This is what Cat wants to share with you. She will teach you how to make a beautiful cowl and will discuss ways to take what you learn in this workshop and apply it to a variety of garments and accessories; in other words, this river of learning will go far. Note: Cat has taught this method for some years now and she especially loves teaching it to those who think they cannot do it, or would be uncomfortable doing it.
