(Not So) Plain Weaving

DESCRIPTION
You’ve learned to warp and weave…but now what? There are a number of patterns that can be woven by threading with different colors, but what if you want to get a different effect without changing the threading? In this class we’ll cover balanced or plain weave, weft faced weaves and warp faced weaves.
(Patterns requiring threading changes are covered in the upcoming class series Color and Weave).
We will also be exploring the effect of proportion between warp and weft on the cloth produced.

INFORMATION
Maximum number of students: 6
Minimum number of students: 3
Experience: Must have warped, woven and finished at least one “project”.
Homework: YES: Warp the loom and wind 3 shuttles. Please see below for details.
Skill Level: Beginner and up.
Prerequisites: Project planning, Warping and Edge finishes or equivalent. Please see instructor.

MATERIALS NEEDED

  • Loom: Rigid heddle loom, warped with 8-10” weaving width with the warp spread.
  • 3 shuttles, either stick or with bobbins.
  • Bring a notebook, pencil/pen and any glasses needed for close work.
  • Standard knitting supplies: Yarn needle, scissors, measuring tape and opening stitch markers.
  • Worsted weight yarn for the warp. Plan for a finished sample length of 36 in. If you want to make
a longer warp (to do an additional project at home) don’t forget to include the extra project
length and the length between the sampler and project. If you want to cut off the sampler first
then please add additional length for tieing on again, and spreading the warp.
  • Shuttle 1: same yarn as warp. Can be a different color.
Shuttle 2: smaller yarn. Fingering, lace or sport weight
Shuttle 3: larger yarn than warp. Can use Aran, but try something Bulky weight.
If you need to use one of our looms talk with the instructor.
