Clasped Weft Weaving

DESCRIPTION
Also known as clasped hands, Clasped Weft is a way to add color in weft only in a variety of different shapes. The finished look is similar to intarsia in knitting. In this class we will cover how to do simple geometric shapes.

INFORMATION
Maximum number of students: 6-8
Minimum number of students: 3
Experience: Must have warped, woven and finished at least one “project”.
Homework: YES: Warp the loom and wind 2 shuttles. See below for details.
Skill Level: Advanced Beginner and up.
Prerequisites: Project planning, Warping and Edge finishes or equivalent. See instructor.

MATERIALS NEEDED

  • Loom: Rigid heddle loom, warped with 10-15” weaving width with the warp spread.
  • 2-3 shuttles, either stick or with bobbins.
  • Bring a notebook, pencil/pen and any glasses needed for close work.
  • Standard knitting supplies: Yarn needle, scissors, measuring tape and locking stitch markers.
  • We suggest using a smooth superwash worsted weight yarn such as Cascade 220 or Plymouth Superwash Worsted. Your weft can be smaller but that means it will take more time to weave. Use worsted weight yarn for the warp. Plan for a finished sample length of 12 in.
  • If you want to make a longer warp (to do an additional project at home) don’t forget to include the extra project length and the length between the sampler and project.
  • If you want to cut off the sampler first then please add additional length for tying on and spreading the warp again.
  • Worsted weight for the weft in at least 1 different color but no more than 3.
If you need to use one of our looms please talk with the instructor. This will also require arranging time for you to warp the loom at the store before the class.
